Considering the number of mountain rivers in the South West of France, it is not surprising to find a number of active and championship-winning canoe and canoe-kayak clubs.

 

For the beginner there are courses on the calmer stretches of river or on lakes. For the more experienced, there are some very challenging courses and long-distance routes, with many clubs willing to organise holidays or events.

 

There are several go carting tracks within the area at Tarbes and Pau.

 

Cycling is not so much a sport but a passion in France.

 

At the Old School bed and breakfast on the hill top there are many tracks so you can ride for miles without using the roads.

 

For the more energetic there are many of hills and valleys and only an hour away are the Pyrénées. Cycle routes include the Tour des Pyrénées Atlantiques, Randonnée de l'Armagnac, Bigorre Aragon, la Ronde des Mousquetaires, Circuit Intérieur des Landes, le Tour des Landes and the Raid Pyrénéen.

The area includes France's finest salmon and sea-trout fishing, whilst river trout can be found just about everywhere. Plenty of coarse fishing too.

 

The local pony is the Pottok, a small horse that was once exported to Britain as pit ponies. Today the pottok provides rides for children at numerous country fairs.

 

There are a number of centres throughout the area where children learn to ride,  Pony-trekking with the mountains as a dramatic backdrop is an unforgettable experience! There are many horse racing / trotting circuits.

 

There are walks to suit all ages and abilities within the region including the GR65 Way of St James pilgrimage.

 

 

In Marciac there is a water side at the edge of the stunning lake. There are many natural and man made lakes within the beautiful Gers region; nearby Mielan and Mirande have lakes and swimming areas.
